A child learning to walk (sketch)

Rembrandt (c1635)

This is so simple but I think about it a lot. I love the physical connection across all four characters at the front and the sense of space created by the woman carrying heavy stuff at the back, none of whose lines touch anyone else. Rembrandt’s drawings are an absolute treasure trove, and I can think of music like this – Schubert, Tallis, Monteverdi – such apparent simplicity, where every stroke, note, gesture counts, and you couldnt change a thing without diminishing its integrity or its genius.
